Where Fabric Never Hung

Originally commissioned for a Homearama showcase home, this trompe-l'oeil installation was created to introduce softness, elegance, and visual movement into an upstairs alcove connecting two adjoining bedrooms. Inspired by the designer's color palette, the painted drapery was developed entirely by hand, including the continuation of striped patterns through every fold, twist, and gathered contour of the illusion.
Careful attention to light, shadow, proportion, and fabric behavior allowed the painted forms to settle naturally into the architecture of the space, creating the impression of real suspended textiles rather than painted surfaces. The illusion proved convincing enough that even those familiar with the artist's work initially mistook the walls for actual fabric treatment.

Designed to feel quietly integrated rather than attention-seeking, the finished piece brings softness, ambiance, and a sense of lived-in elegance to the surrounding rooms ~ as though the fabric had always belonged there, despite never having hung at all.
