Vaulted Mineral
This third-level dome ceiling was created using layered Italian plaster applied by hand while suspended above and open spiral staircase on a temporary platform built specifically for the project. Executed during active construction of the home, the finish required multiple applications of plaster in varying tones, worked with brushes and burnished by trowel to develop depth, movement, and a softly reflective surface.
Metallic french-gold bands were inroduced between plastered sections to define the architecture of the dome while allowing the organic movement of the finish to remain the focal point. The layered textures and mineral-like veining create the impression of aged stone or excavated plaster rather than a traditionally painted surface.
Designed to feel immersive rather than ornamental, the finished dome transforms the ceiling into a sculptural architectural element ~ one that shifts subtly with light and reveals new movement and texture from every angle below.
